A Beautiful Composition, Pani Da Rang….

Those who know me beyond web(and some who know me via web too) are well aware about my liking of Punjabi music and when it comes to it it, I don’t like at all the crap which is now being added by the Hindi language movie makers-a Punjabi song just for the sake of having it within the movie. And what makes me even more mad is that how crazy people go for such 3rd class songs and think that’s the Punjabi music and culture is all about. News flash folks, its NOT what Punjabi music is all about and definitely not Punjab’s culture. Okay may be I shall write another post about this topic some other time. The current post is actually about a movie song and may appear as a surprise to many, a song which I actually did like.

Vicky Donor  is an upcoming movie starring a new completely new team of actors in it. I am not sure( or concerned) that how good(or bad) the movie is going to be neither about its success but I somehow stumbled on one song of it today, Pani Da Rang which is sung by the lead actor of the movie, Aayushman Khurana who is doing his debut I believe in the movie world by this flick. The song, without a surprise, is a Punabi song and though IMO Aayushman is not a very good singer, has come up well with minimal music and good and sensible lyrics in addition to support it. Here is the official video of the song released by Eros Entertainment, enjoy

I am not doing the English translation of the lyrics at the moment. If I shall be getting enough requests to do so, I shall be posting the English translation and the original Punjabi lyrics over here. So if you do like the song so much, let me know otherwise, hmm enjoy the music only may be Smile.

Update: So it seems that the song is really getting popular. Two requests in the form of comments, on the very day of the posting the song clearly is a sign. Alright, so without being so fussy, here are the lyrics of the song in Punjabi following with the translation of the same in English,

Pani da rang vekh ke,
Akhiyan chon hanjhu rul de!
Maahiya na aaya mera, maahiya na aaya!
Raanjhna na aaya mera, maahiya na aaya!
Maahiya na aaya mera,Raanjhna na aaya mera
Akhan da noor vekh k,
Akhiyan chon hanjhu rulde!

Kamli ho gayi tere bina,aAja ranjhan mere!
Baarish barkha sab kuch beh gayi,
Aaya ni jind mere!
Akhan da noor vekh k,
Akhiyan chon hanjhu rulde!

Kothe utte beh ke, Akhiyan milaunde,
Na jaana  mainu kabhi chhod!
Tere utte marda, pyar tainu karda,
Milega tujhe na koi hor!
Tu bhi aa sab ko chhod ke,
Meri akhiyan chon hanjhu rulde!
Pani da rang vekh ke,
Akhiyan chon hanjhu rulde!

And its translation in English,

When I see color of the water,
Tears drop down from my eyes continuously,
My beloved has still not come, my dearest has still not come!
When I see shine in the eyes,
Tears drop down from my eyes continuously!

I am going crazy without you, now please come my love!
Rain has already poured in,
You still have not come my love!
When I see the shine in the eyes,
Tears drop down from my eyes continuously!

We used to sit on the rooftop, looked into each other's eyes,
Don't ever leave me and go!
Some one who is ready to die for you, who loves you,
You won't find another person alike me!
You also leave all behind and come to me,
Tears drop down from my eyes continuously!

Hope this would help you to enjoy the song in a much better way and as like always, any corrections for the lyrics and/or in the English translation is most welcome. Do post either of both in the comment section and I shall do the update with a credit given to you. Enjoy!

To be honest, I really didn't know and if you ask me, that's not really a very good piece of poetry actually. If the poet meant to say that after like the water flowing, her eyes are also having tears, it would had a lot more better sense. But then again, may be the poet may had something in his mind and penned the lyrics. I am not sure , with whatever knowledge I have based on the reading of poetry of writers like Faraz, Mohsin, it appears more like a "tuk bandi" :-) . I shall try to search and shall post if would find something more meaningful.

Ekta,

I am not sure that what's the real meaning behind seeing the color of the water and tears being rolled down. I have mentioned about views some where above in the comment section already. Have a read of it to know what's my thoughts are about the lyrics.

wanted to set a new tone for the english lyrics cud u make the lyrics more easier so dat i can compose good music for it

Wow, that's going to be a very tough task. Give me some time, like few days and I shall see what I can come up with.

To all, if you think that you can make the song's English translation a little more easier for Ekta, please put it across and probably, some thing nicer may come up than just me trying it alone.

For the question of "pani da rang" and its connection; pani can also mean tears. So in seeing the colour of her tears, his own begin to flow.

thanx Aman for the lyrics
i guess by 1st 2 lines poet means that by seeing the colour water he realizes that water is colourless as his life without her thats why he cries..

Rishi, Abhinest,

I believe that can be a valid explanation of the first 2 lines but I am still not clear that its mentioned as "pani da rang"? Tears and water dont have any color so why this line?

Thanks for the explanation though, appreciate it.

Hi Aman,

I read your blog for the first time... I must say I am going to follow your blog...
I love the song and I love the lyrics even more... I wanted to present my perception of the lyrics from a poet's point of view (since I write myself and only if that's okay with you)....
By the first two lines I think the lyricist or poet meant that when he saw the transparent and clear colour of water he remembered his love which was so transparent and pure... Thus, that clear, transparent love also reflected in his eyes in the form of tears....
This is purely my perception... Open to disagreements and alternate views... :)

Hi Aman,

Hi Kritika :)

I read your blog for the first time... I must say I am going to follow your blog...

Thanks so much and I am very happy to hear that you would be visiting here in the future too. Thanks once again!

Kritika,

I guess we can take your description definitely as a strong contender for the explanation. But still, am not sure that I am truly convinced. But given the fact that I read a lot of poetry than writing myself. And am far far away of being a poet(just write some bits and pieces here and there, that's all) so my view can be fairly wrong. Let's hear from others what they think about your explanation.

On a different, that's awesome to know that you write. Would you mind sharing some of your writings for me to read? If you can, you can drop me an email at amansharma at aristadba dot com . It would be just great!

According to me the imagery tha the lyricist wants to create is that the poet is waiting fr his lover, and during the wait he starts driniking(liqour is often referred to as "rangeen pani" in punjabi)and during the course of drinking the poet gets emotional and nostalgic therefore tears flow from his eyes.

Hey Aman,

Nice job mate! I think the song is good only because of its minimalistic nature, music, singer, and even lyrics.

I was reading the comments here and came across something about the first two lines...

I think it just means the brilliance and clarity of clear "rang-less" water is bringing tears in his eyes.. You know, the happier kinda tears seeing something beautiful. Just my perception though. I think, in correlation with the line "Akkhaan da noor vekh ke.." this fits in better.

Anyway, will try to be a regular reader from now on. You are right. Knowing the lyrics of any song adss a certain beauty (or the lack of it) than just listening to the music. For that we have instrumentals, right? ;)

A really nice emotional song... I didn't really like it on first hearing but eventually it caught on, especially when I tried catching the lyrics ... thnx for the translation... It actually makes u miss your loved one... The movie's really nice too I watched it last nite and found it very entertaining...

I'm a first time visitor to you blog, honestly there's too much to read but I liked what I've seen so far. Keep up the good work. Some day I wanna have my own blog. Just too lazy right now.

I was looking for a good explanation (not just translation) of the first 2 lines and I think I am most convinced with the explanation given by Abhinesh. It makes a lot of sense.

Thanks Aman for the blog.
Thanks Abhinesh for your explanation of first 2 lines.

Would like to see more discussion on the meaning of first 2 lines though to get more clarification.

Aman.... said…
Anonymous,

Either you are a complete idiot or don't know to read. Did I preach anything that I am misleading anyone by my words? Please open your eyes and see a little more closely that I have VERY clearly mentioned that if ANYONE thinks that there can be a correction, I am all ears for it! Now, rather than saying complete non-sense, it would had been a lot better if you would had told that what's wrong in the lyrics and/or in the translation. And before you make a comment, please note that there are many others who have already read the same and didn't find any mistakes except for the translation of the first 2 lines which also I have clearly admitted that I am not much aware about. Thank you!

Thanks a bunch for the kind words and for stopping by here. Yes, that's indeed a weird combination of being a complete nerd and yet to have interest in music, poetry and other things. What can I say than this that I am a little different :) ? But on a serious note, thanks a bunch and let me share this that most of my friends are of the similar nature only :) . Extremely techie yet devotees of Nusrat, Debi, Ahmad Faraz, Faiz :) .

Pani da rang vekh ke
Akhiyaan cho anju rul de
Maahiya na aaya mera, maahiya na aaya
Maahiya na aaya mera, maahiya na aaya
Ranjhana na aaya mera, maahiya na aaya
Maahiya na aaya mera, ranjhana na aaya
Akhaan da noor vekh ke
Akhaan da noor vekh ke
Akhiyaan cho anju rul de

Seeing the color of water,
tears roll down my eyes
my lover didn't come, my beloved didn't come..
seeing the glow of the eyes,
tears roll down my eyes..

Kamli ho gayi tere bina aaja ranjhan mere
Baarish barkha sab kuch beh gayi, aaya nahi jind mere
Akhaan da noor vekh ke
Akhiyaan cho anju rul de

I went mad without you, come o my love,
all the rain flowed away, nothing stayed in my heart,
seeing the glow of eyes,
tears roll down my eyes..

Kotthe utte beh ke akhiyaan milaunde
Na jaana main tu kabhi chhod
Tere utte marda, pyaar tenu karda
Milega tujhe na koi aur
Tu bhi aa sabko chhod ke
Tu bhi aa sabko chhod ke
Meri akhiyaan cho anju rul de
Akhiyaan cho anju rul de

on the roof our eyes meet,
I don't have to leave you ever..
I fell for you, I love you,
You'll not find anyone else (so much loving)
You too come, leaving everyone..
You too come, leaving everyone..
tears roll down my eyes..
tears roll down the eyes..

Pani da rang vekh ke
Akhiyaan cho anju rul de...

Did visit the blog as part of looking meaning for the song. Someone did dedicate me the song, and i am listening to it the first time. Do not know punjabi language and hence had to hunt for the same. The translation was very helpful and now the song makes lot of sense. :)

i have an interpretation, and would like to know your views:

When the rains arrive, after a long time, the world seems beautiful, and thats when i miss my beloved. Wish she was here with me.

Paani da rang vekhke could mean"when i see the rains "
